CHEMICAL FORMULA: C10H16
Citrus Terpenes is a mixture of unsaturated optically-active cyclic aliphatic hydrocarbons, with about 95% d-limonene and 5% the essence of citrus.
Citrus Terpenes are removed from the waste peel of citrus fruits by a second pressing, during the separation of juice from the whole fruit.
The mixture can be extracted from the fruit of the common sweet orange tree (Citrus sinensis, Rutaceae), grapefruit tree (Citrus paradisi, Macfadyen), lemon tree (Citrus limonum, Rutaceae), lime tree (Citrus aurantifolia, Rutaceae), and/or tangerine tree (Citrus reticulata [mandarin]).
Citrus Terpenes are derived solely from renewable biomass sources.

Terpenes are the highly aromatic molecules produced by thousands of plants in nature, typically as a defense mechanism against predators and pests.
The human body, as it evolved alongside plants, developed specialized receptors in its brain, nervous system, and immune system that are compatible with not only internally produced enzymes, proteins, and other life-giving chemicals, but also phytochemicals from the plant world—including terpenes from cannabis.
Citrus Terpenes, as its name implies, delivers a scent similar to citrus fruits, including grapefruit, lemon, lime, and orange.
In terms of medicinal efficacy, this major (primary) terpene acts as an antioxidant, anti-inflammatory (good for sufferers of arthritis, cancer, and fibromyalgia), and anti-cancer (like other terpenes and cannabinoids, it has been shown to shrink cancerous tumors).
Similar to other terpenes, limonene is commonly used in beauty products, cleaners, food flavoring, medicine, and perfumes.
Beyond its distinctive and alluring aroma, limonene delivers a wide range of medical efficacies, making Citrus Terpenes a molecule of interest to many within the patient and medical communities.
These benefits include its role as an antiasthmatic (driven by its anti-inflammatory properties), which helps those suffering from asthma, bronchitis, and sinus allergies.
Citrus Terpenes is found most commonly in the cannabis strains Durban Poison, Jack Herer, and Super Lemon Haze, among others.
Interesting facts: Limonene is toxic to aquatic life and, as a standalone molecule, is flammable and considered a biofuel.

Citrus Terpenes is used in chemical synthesis as a precursor to carvone and as a renewably-based solvent in cleaning products.
Citrus Terpenes takes its name from the lemon, as the rind of the lemon, like other citrus fruits, contains considerable amounts of this compound, which contributes to their odor.
Citrus Terpenes is a chiral molecule, and biological sources produce one enantiomer: the principal industrial source, citrus fruit, contains D-li Limonene is common in cosmetic products.
As the main odor constituent of citrus (plant family Rutaceae), D-limonene is used in food manufacturing and some medicines, e.g., bitter alkaloids, as a flavoring; it is also used as botanical insecticide.
Citrus Terpenes is added to cleaning products such as hand cleansers to give a lemon-orange fragrance (see orange oil).
In contrast, L-limonene has a piney, turpentine-like odor. Limonene is increasingly being used as a solvent for cleaning purposes, such as the removal of oil from machine parts, as it is produced from a renewable source (citrus oil, as a byproduct of orange juice manufacture).

Citrus Terpenes is the main chemical constituent found in the cold-pressed peel oils that can be derived from all edible citrus fruits, namely oranges, lemons, and limes.
After the first pressing of the peels, it is obtained from the resultant oil through the process of distillation. The two chemical forms of Limonene are d-Limonene, which is found largely in orange peels, and L-Limonene, which is found largely in lemon peels.
Citrus Terpenes gets its name from the botanical name for “Lemon” – Citrus limon – due to the richness of this natural compound in lemon peels.
Its wide range of beneficial applications has made d-Limonene one of the most prominent natural Terpenes. With a light, pleasantly dry, and refreshingly-sweet citrusy scent, Citrus Terpenes is valued for its aroma and is mostly used in fragrances as well as green cleaning products rather than for therapeutic applications.

Citrus Terpenes can be found most abundantly in the rinds of citrus fruits. Think about busting open a citrus fruit open or going on a cleaning spree, there is a slight euphoric lift that may occur.
This is limonene doing its job! Limonene interacts with our serotonin and dopamine receptors to help stabilize mood, decrease anxiety and facilitate euphoria.
Citrus Terpenes, which is a volatile oil, constitutes approximately 98% of orange peel oil by weight and has moderately good knockdown activity against ectoparasites of companion animals.

-Citrus Terpeness use in consumer and household cleaning products (ie. Citra~olve, PineSol, Orange Mexo, etc.) led to the development of industrial cleaning products and an electronics defluxer, thereby becoming an alternative to chlorinated hydrocarbon solvent.
-The identification of terpene compounds and its use in household cleaners provided the impetus for electronics industry involvement in the development of an alternative terpene-based electronics defluxer. A U.S. patent issued to Hayes et all1 in 1987, describes a rosin flux cleaner consisting of a terpene material and emulsifying surfactants.
-In 1988, ATtT and Petroferm Inc., determined d-Limonene as having the most commercial potential as an electronics defluxer. Petroferm then announced the formulation of the semi-aqueous terpene-based cleaner BIOACT EC-~(~~), consisting of d-Limonene and a surfactant material, that could serve as an alternative electronics def luxer.
-Citrus Terpenes was reformulated into BIOACT EC-~R(~~) which has the advantage of being recyclable.
-Citrus Terpenes may be used at full strength, that is without dilution, as an eco-friendly detergent; however, direct application to painted surfaces, plexiglass, plastics, or fiberglass is not recommended.
-Conversely, it may be added to wetting agents, such as water or vinegar bases, to achieve better solubilization. Either method will make for a natural yet equally effective industrial-strength “green” surface disinfectant that is ideal for household cleaning.
